"Making & Taking Opportunities for Conversation" with Rev. Debra Crumpton

April 05, 2023

As an 18-year old student at the University of Alabama, Debra Crumpton visited a Methodist Church near campus “not because [she] was seeking the gospel, but to challenge the church after hearing that white churches were not welcoming African-American students.” What she found was a church that not only welcomed her, but also embraced her. In the more than five decades that followed, Debra faithfully and passionately served in the United Methodist Church, first as laity and then as an ordained elder.

During the final 21 and a half years of her ministry before retiring in 2022, Rev. Debra Crumpton served in cross-cultural appointments across the Central Texas Conference – often as the first African-American AND first woman in those appointments. In the following video, hear from Debra how she found the act of engaging in honest and open conversation helped overcome and adversity and challenges faced in her ministry and life.
