Disciple Making Missions in Alvarado

January 10, 2019

First United Methodist Church Alvarado is activating the WIG and making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by engaging in Disciple Making Missions across its community and around the world.

The church partners with Helping Hands for Jesus, the local food pantry for the Alvarado area and members volunteer their time and give their financial support, while the General Service Fund provides financial help to members of the community with utility bills, rent, prescriptions, etc. First Alvarado’s back pack program provides food for the weekends for children at three area elementary schools . The food is purchases, packs into gallon zip lock bags and delivers food to keep students fed over the weekend to three different area elementary schools. First Alvarado purchased and packed 25 cleaning buckets that were sent to UMCOR/Sager Brown on a mission trip in 2018, and due to that presentation, 11 new volunteers will go to work at the Depot at Sager Brown in 2019. First Alvarado’s youth have done yard work and cleanup for a local man needing help. They also baked cookies for Kairos Prison program, made placemats and work with the homeless. 15 people participated in the Texas Ramp Project completing 40 ramps. The church also started a Family Meal once a month to invite the community in for food and fellowship.

If any of these ministries spark an idea for how you and your church can engage with your community but you aren't sure how to start, contact First Alvarado UMC (http://fumcalvarado.org).
