BELIEVE: A Lenten Study with Bishop Saenz - Second Sunday in Lent from John 3:1-18 "Nicodemus and Jesus: A Model of Transitioning Discipleship"

March 03, 2023

To believe in Jesus is of great importance to John. He uses the verb “believe” 84 times in his gospel, which is 50 more times than the other three gospels combined (Matthew-9, Mark-15, Luke-10).  John claims that believing Christ begins not by seeing miracles but by taking Jesus at his word. Hearing, for John, leads one to belief in Jesus, the person, the Eternal Word of God who came from God, whose claims and promises are true and life-giving.

As United Methodists, our beliefs are formed over time by the serious reflection on Scripture, church teachings, reason, and human experience, with Scripture as our primary source – and the help of the Holy Spirit. As a result, our beliefs help us more fully participate in God's work in the world in a clear, convincing, and compelling way.

On this second Sunday of Lent, Bishop Saenz reflects on how belief is born in Nicodemus through what he hears during his encounter with Jesus.
